Self Portrait at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah

As a fine art photographic artist I am interested in expressing my vision of the world of motorsports, motorcycle traveling, landscape photography and many other aspects of the art of photography. I want to make art that speaks to the common men and women who are the backbone of the world. Since 2011 I have devoted my efforts to photographing Heavy Highway and Bridge Construction. My construction photos show the world of construction from the perspective of the men and women who build America.

I’ve been a photographer for over 40 years. I studied Art at the Louisville School of Art in the early 80’s where I majored in Sculpture and minored in Photography. I was accepted into art school based on a portfolio of custom painted motorcycles, cars and vans that I was doing from the late 60’s through the late 70’s.

I’ve always been an artist, a motorcyclist and a hot rodder which influences my work to this day. I have been heavily involved with Land Speed Racing at the Bonneville Salt Flats from 2006 through 2011 as both a racing participant and a volunteer starter at the BUB International Motorcycle Speed Trials. I am working on a book of images from that event encompassing all six years.

I strive to showcase the efforts of humankind while also sharing the beauty of our everyday existence. My work is in numerous private collections and I have won many photo contests over the past five years. In 2013 I was selected for the Engineering News Record’s “Construction Photography of the Year” award. I have had numerous solo exhibits in Louisville and been part of several group shows at galleries in the US. My work is distinctive for it’s use of composition and color and it’s ability to impart a sense of wonder in the viewer’s eye.

In 2012 I was elected president of The Louisville Photographic Society, which was founded in 1941, and has been providing encouragement and guidance to Louisville photographers for over 70 years. I consider it a great honor to be part of the long line of distinguished men and women who have held this office over all that time.

I teach workshops on many photographic subjects especially HDR shooting and processing, composition and beginning photography. I teach classes for small groups as well as provide private instruction for those who want a one on one learning experience.

  1. Nick, little did I know back in junior high school that you’d be the incredible photographer that you are today. I remember being in art class with you, and being impressed with what you did even then at the tender age of 12 or 13. Your photographic images are fantastic. Of course, I have your amazing work displayed in my home. I’m proud to know you, my friend.

    1. How nice of you to say this. I am proud to know you too. Hard to believe that we have know each other for over fifty years. Hopefully we’ve got another fifty or so to go. Keep on singing your song and pursuing your muse. Peace my friend.

      1. Barb,
Don’t ya hate it when you find that typo after you’ve sent the post out into the ether. Referring to the sentence where “know” should have been “known” ;p

    1. Thank you, I’m several years older than you, sixty four, but I believe that we should not let age prevent us from being passionate about the things we love. For me it’s art, photography and motorcycles; just toady I rode 250 miles with an old and dear friend as he passed through Louisville on his way back to St. Louis. At breakfast and lunch we talked about how much we both love being in the wind and how fortunate we are that we haven’t let age overtake us.

I also thank you for the kind words about my photography, I hope you’ll continue to visit and comment as you see fit.

  2. Nick, I showed your work to a friend of mine involved in the LeMay Auto Museum and they thought it might be a good connections for you….http://www.lemaymuseum.org/…if you are interested or already have contact and work with them feel free to contact me directly and I can make the connections if you don’t already have them.

  3. Nick, finally got to visit your site. Great stuff, love your work. I’ve only been in The Ville for about two years and I’ve been fasinated with the Big 4 bridge since first seeing it. Have not been able to capture it like you; glad your getting the opportunity to document it’s completion.
I also luv motorcycles; I have a 1988 harley bagger. Unfortunately, surgery last year has sidelined me for awhile.
Keep up the good work; I will watch with great interest the unfolding story of the Big 4 bridge.

  4. First-time viewer, long-time fan! Cool beans! Your art is so professional and inspirational. thanks for sharing with the rest of us, and keep it comin’!

  5. Really clean, sharp photos. I especially liked the one of the colorful garden patio. My daughter is the photographer in the family. She can look at something that doesn’t even look like anything, then turn it into art with a camera phone. Some people are just blessed with an eye for that.

  6. From reading your “about” we have some things in common, and I really look forward to seeing more of your art work. I really enjoyed browsing your website. Aint’ nothing like making a living doing what you love to do. Not that it will get more points when I get to heaven, but I’m an “amateur” photographer and love hot rods. I hope to learn a few things by hanging around.

  7. Hey Nick! I don’t know why I didn’t think of it … but would you be interested in accepting the Liebster Award? One more follower and you wouldn’t fit the criteria so it’s the perfect time, if you’d like it. I think I panicked when I saw all the questions you have to answer, so I would completely understand if you don’t have the time for it. Let me know though, if you’d accept, so I can send you the link.

    1. I think I’ll pass on this LBT. It doesn’t really seem like something I’d like to do, too many questions, but I really appreciate your thinking of me.

  8. Hey there…
Just dropping you a note to say “I hope my Blog didn’t over load your inbox recently’.”
I think I had something set wrong and as I was creating a post it may have sent out an email to every “follower” of my blog as I made changes. If this happened to you, I am so sorry.
And in case I haven’t said so yet…Thanks for stopping by my site.

  9. Hi SpeedDemon2,
Thanks for the visit to my blog. Awesome is the first word that popped in my mind after browsing your site. I think your passion for this is inspirational. I’m definitely going to look around some more.
    Warm regards,
    Mary

  10. Nick Thanks so much for the pics you have published of wolfy and I.I also want to thank you for the time and interest you take in hearing my story about my ongoing battle with cancer.

Believe it or not, I was extremely introverted well into my 30’s. I feel pretty comfortable in my aging skin today but have always been apprehensive when in front of a camera. I don’t know what the magic is that makes me feel comfortable and uninhibited whenever you pull out a camera.

My family dearly appreciates the phot’s you have taken that help tell my battle with cancer. Keep up the magic, I always look forward to seeing you on the job. Not only are you great photographer, you good man!
